Groundwater supplies
The Orange County Water District is able to track the Orange County Groundwater Basin’s water supply on a monthly basis.
The District tracks basin water supply at the end of each month by:
- Carefully measuring the volume of water delivered to District recharge facilities
- Using historical relationships to estimate the volume of natural recharge based on actual monthly rainfall
- Cooperative reporting of monthly groundwater pumping volumes from our major groundwater producing agencies
- Using the difference between total supplies and total pumping to calculate the change in groundwater storage at the end of each month.
This almost real-time information allows us to make more informed management decisions on future water supplies and pumping.
