Employee of the Month
July 2010
David McMichael, Environmental Specialist - Natural Resources

Dave shows a high degree of individual initiative, often volunteering for special tasks. For example, he volunteered to design the landscaping for the new SAWA office in Chino. He put together a landscape plan including a site drawing that had to be drawn to scale. He organized a planting day and supervised the installation of the irrigation. He put on a native plant class/workshop for our local Vector Control Agency. He spent a number of hours putting together a power point presentation with his own photos of the native flora and fauna of the Prado Basin. The participants really enjoyed the class and had a chance to put what they learned to the test out in the field. Dave recently volunteered to take the lead on two Eagle Scout Projects at Prado Basin. One involves the construction and installation of 25 tree swallow boxes. The second project is to clear an area of non-native vegetation and replace it with native grasses and other appropriate plants. Both of these projects will require some volunteer weekend work for Dave.
Dave has a great deal of knowledge and experience with native plants. He has used these skills to assist the Engineering and Planning departments with native vegetation surveys for numerous projects here at Prado and at Field Headquarters. He is constantly trying to improve on our native plant nursery, for which he has been very successful at growing some local natives from cuttings and from seed, saving the District from having to purchase these plants from other nurseries.
Dave consistently takes on more then his share of the workload, accomplishing many different tasks at once. He is good at prioritizing his schedule and has seemed to figure out the max workload for a span of time while still leaving room for that task that might come up unannounced. Although his plate is full, he has been experimenting with placing motion cameras around the Basin to photograph the local wildlife. Some of those images can be seen on OCWD.com. He sets a positive example for other employees. He is very punctual and usually the first one to arrive and often stays late to finish up any loose ends. For all of these reasons and many more, David was selected for Employee of the Month. Congratulations David!
