Employee Of The Month
The Employee of the Month and Year Program is established to recognize outstanding Orange County Water District (OCWD) employees and to acknowledge their contributions to OCWD. The program hopes to encourage quality work, process or continuous improvement, teamwork, savings, customer service, and a high level of dedication. The program recognizes that OCWD employees are the source of our strength, reputation and innovation.

Monica Villalvazo, Laboratory Technician
Over the past year, Monica's responsibilities have been expanded to include the use of sophisticated instrumentation in OCWD’s Advanced Water Quality Assurance Laboratory. At the same time, she has shown strong initiative in not only performing her duties in an excellent manner, but on a regular basis going above and beyond what is expected of her. She approached supervisors and coworkers with new ideas and suggestions for improvements on a number of occasions, improving documentation of the metals prep procedure in two separate ways, producing a new SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for a complex calculation procedure, and suggesting improvements to the Total Coliform SOP to save on time, labor, and material costs. Most recently, Monica discovered an opportunity to improve the accuracy of one of the analytes in a detection limit standard preparation procedure that had not previously been suggested by staff. This was made possible not only by Monica's "sharp eyes," but her devoting a number of hours to researching and documenting the problem, including finally submitting revised SOP and prep sheets that were able to be used as is, without further modification. The lab section supervisors agree that she exercised more than due diligence with respect to the performance of her job in this instance. Rather than just being concerned with getting data out, she involved herself proactively in insuring that QC requirements were met and that the data she produced met the high reporting standards of the laboratory, not only for herself, but for all other analysts going forward. Monica is currently contributing at a level beyond what is expected of a Laboratory Technician, and clearly deserves to be named Employee of the Month for the high level of support she is providing to the Lab and the District.
