Environmental Stewardship

OCWD carries out award-winning environmental compliance that also provides water benefits.

As part of our agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers to store water behind Prado Dam, the District’s restoration efforts have revitalized the least Bell’s vireo, a once endangered California song bird. Thanks to OCWD, the vireo population has increased from only 18 pairs in the 1980s to more than 900 pairs today.

OCWD also has a program to remove a water guzzling invasive non-native grass called Arundo donax from the watershed. Each year, OCWD saves more than $1 million in water costs by removing this environmental plague and restoring more water-efficient natural habitat.
