OCWD Offers Birder Tours at Prado Wetlands
The Orange County Water District owns 2,150 acres behind Prado Dam (Riverside County), including nearly 500 acres of the largest constructed wetlands in Southern California. In addition to providing an ideal habitat for birds, the wetlands effectively naturally clean Santa Ana River water used to replenish groundwater supplies.
Tours of the constructed wetlands are offered by reservation. An environmental expert from the Orange County Water District guides attendees on a four-hour, three-mile bird tour through the wetlands. Expect to see birds such as herons, egrets, several types of raptors, screech owls, warblers and many different types of shore birds. Golden eagles and least Bell's vireo may also be seen in the area depending on the time of year.
To schedule a tour, please call at least two weeks in advance. See tour dates below. Requests for specific dates are subject to staff availability, and all guests must be accompanied by a District employee. Tours are canceled in the event of inclement weather.
