FULLERTON COUNCILMEMBER JAN M. FLORY REAPPOINTED TO ORANGE COUNTY WATER DISTRICT BOARD

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – At its January meeting, the Fullerton City Council reappointed Jan Flory as the Division 10 representative to the Orange County Water District (OCWD) Board of Directors for a four-year term expiring December 3, 2004. Division 10 represents the City of Fullerton. Flory was first appointed to the OCWD Board of Directors on February 2, 1999.

"The more you learn about California and Orange County’s water supplies, the more you realize that water is an increasingly important natural resource for Orange County. Population grow, increased demands and future water quality issues will make water a significant issue in Orange County’s continued prosperity," said Jan Flory. "I look forward to working with my fellow board members on these and other issues in the years ahead."

Director Flory is the chair of the Property Management Committee and vice chair of the Administration and Finance Issues Committee for OCWD.

Flory has been on the Fullerton City Council since October 1994. She served as Mayor in 1998-99 and as Mayor Pro Tem from 1997-98. Her service in Fullerton also includes terms on the City’s Planning and Community Services Commissions, as well as on the Bicycle Task Force and the Maple School Task Force. In addition, she is a former appointee to the Santa Ana River Flood Protection Agency and the Sister City Association. She is only the second woman in 66 years to serve on the OCWD Board.

Flory has been a family law attorney since 1986. She was admitted to the practice of law in 1986 by the California State Bar and the U.S. Court of Appeals. She is also a member of the Orange County and American Bar Associations, as well as the Family Law Section of the Orange County Bar. She was a licensed real estate broker for 15 years prior to becoming a lawyer.

Active in the community, Director Flory is a member of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce, the YWCA, and the First Christian Church of Fullerton. She is also a member of the Boys and Girls Club of North Orange County, and was honored with a "Good Guys" award for her support of the Boys and Girls Club.

OCWD’s Board is composed of ten directors – seven elected by division and three appointed. The three appointed members are from the cities of Fullerton, Santa Ana and Anaheim, are all appointed by their respective City Councils.

OCWD is a special agency created by the California Legislature to maintain and manage the groundwater basin under the northern and central areas of Orange County. The OCWD supplies 75 percent of the water needs to more than 2.7 million residents and businesses in Anaheim, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, most of Irvine, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Newport Beach, Orange, Placentia, Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Stanton, Tustin, Villa Park, Westminster and Yorba Linda.
