Disaster Preparedness is a Necessity; Your Input is Valuable

The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires that all governmental agencies have disaster preparedness plans to help ensure the safety of its citizens in the event of an emergency, to prevent or mitigate disaster impacts, and to qualify for future funding should a disaster occur. With the help of a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in 2007, 20 local service providers developed the Orange County Regional Water and Wastewater Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Plan (found on at www.mwdoc.com/weroc/Hazard-Mitigation) is now being updated to keep it current. Your comments and suggestions are critical as we continue the planning process,

“Public participation in disaster-preparedness planning is extremely important. Residents are encouraged to attend the workshops, ask questions and give us their comments. We look forward to developing a comprehensive plan that includes input from the residents we serve,” says Kelly Hubbard of the Water Emergency Response Organization of Orange County, which is headquartered at the Municipal Water District of Orange County.

County Water Utilities Seek Public Input in Plan Development
Plan Will Help Identify and Protect Region in Case of Disaster

A countywide plan to identify risks posed by natural and manmade disasters – and ways to minimize potential damage before it occurs – is being updated by a coalition of 20 Orange County water and wastewater agencies.

These 20 agencies will sponsor two workshops in January to gather input and suggestions from the public. The workshops will include the results of risk analyses for hazards specific to Orange County, including earthquakes, fires and floods. There will also be a discussion on manmade hazards.

Public workshops will be held at two locations:

North County: City of Buena Park
City Hall, Main Conference Room
6650 Beach Blvd., Buena Park
January 17, 2012, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

South County: Moulton Niguel Water District
Board Room
27500 La Paz Road, Laguna Niguel
January 30, 2012, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The finalized plan will be approved by the respective city councils and boards of directors of the participating service providers, and implemented as part of the comprehensive Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.

Comments and questions can be submitted directly to MWDOC, by e-mailing Khubbard@mwdoc.com, or at one of the public workshops. (DO NOT CALL OCWD)
