Tours & Speaker's Bureau

GROUNDWATER REPLENISHMENT SYSTEM (GWRS)

As a leader in water reuse and groundwater management, Orange County Water District receives hundreds of requests annually to provide tours and briefings for visitors from local colleges, water agencies, the surrounding community and international organizations.  Through its active speaker’s bureau program, OCWD also receives requests for representatives to go out to the community and speak to numerous organizations and schools, as well as at local, national and international conferences.

OCWD is committed to proactive public outreach and education.  It will make every effort to accommodate requests for speakers and tours. Educating the public about advanced wastewater purification is important to garnering support for future GWRS-like projects that are being planned around the world.

Public tours of the Groundwater Replenishment System are offered at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of every month; reservations are required. Tours may also be scheduled for other days of the week, depending on staff availability. Tour groups consisting of 40 or more people cannot be accommodated on the first and second Wednesday of each month. The tour may include climbing stairs, walking and standing for periods of up to 45-60 minutes. The tours may also include Orange County Water District's state-of-the-art Advanced Water Quality Assurance Laboratory.  Special arrangements may also be made to tour the District’s recharge operations in Anaheim and wetlands located above Prado Dam in Riverside County.

PRADO WETLANDS TOURS

Tours of OCWD's constructed wetlands behind Prado Dam are offered by reservation only. An OCWD environmental expert guides attendees on a three-mile walk through the wetlands. During the four-hour tour, guests can expect to see birds such as herons, egrets, several types of raptors, screech owls, warblers and many different types of shore birds. Golden eagles and least Bell's vireo may also be seen in the area during certain seasons. OCWD owns 2,150 acres behind Prado Dam, including nearly 465 acres of the largest constructed wetlands in Southern California. In addition to providing an ideal habitat for birds, the wetlands effectively reduce nitrogen levels in Santa Ana River water.

To schedule a tour, please call at least two weeks in advance. Requests for specific dates are subject to staff availability, and all guests must be accompanied by a District employee. Tours may be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
