Clair A. Hill Scholarship Application Guidelines
2009-2010 Academic Year

Guidelines and Award Criteria for Association of California Water Agencies Scholarship Award

Each academic year the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) awards one Clair A. Hill scholarship in the amount of $5,000 to qualified students in various water resources-related fields of study.

Applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2009.

The guidelines and criteria for applying for this award is as follows:

A. The scholarship will be known as the Clair A. Hill Scholarship. The scholarship funds associated with this award will be made available to the recipient at the beginning of each school year at the start of the fall term.

B. The applicantswho will be considered for the award must be California residents attending California schools. They should have completed their sophomore work and at the time of the award be full-time students in their junior or senior year. They must plan to attend school for the complete academic year.

C. The award will be based not only on scholastic achievement, but also on the individual’s commitment and motivation to his / her chosen vocation. Financial need
will also be given due consideration.

D. The recipient should demonstrate commitment to the field of water resources by pursuing a degree related to, or identified with, engineering, agricultural and / or urban water supply, environmental studies or public administration.

E. The top three candidates will be chosen by the Orange County Water District scholarship committee upon receipt of a completed application form and at least two, but not more than three, recommendations for each candidate. The ACWA scholarship sub-committee will select the final scholarship winner.

F. The award will be presented to each recipient’s school in a lump sum of $5,000.
Actual payments will be made to the recipient by the school in accordance with regulations used at the selected school concerning such payment.

G. Schools selected to participate will be chosen by the Committee from lists of accredited schools located in California and recommended by the Association’s general membership.

Children's Water Education Festival
The Children’s Water Education Festival is for Orange County third, fourth and fifth grade students. The Festival attracts more than 6,000 students annually and is recognized locally and nationally as the largest event of its kind. The Festival teaches youth that they can make a difference in protecting our water resources for today, tomorrow and future generations. OC Water Hero Program
The O.C. Water Hero Program was begun by OCWD in partnership with the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) to encourage the youngest water users to curtail water usage. The program teaches children in K-6th grade simple ways to conserve 20 gallons of water per person, per day. To become O.C. Water Heroes, kids pledge to save water by doing things such as turning off the water when brushing their teeth and taking five-minute or less showers.

Orange County Water 101
O.C. Water 101 is an informative, no-cost water education class about the basics of water in Orange County presented by OCWD at our Fountain Valley headquarters. The course also addresses how the water community will meet the demands of a growing Orange County.

Orange County Water Camp
OC Water Camp is two, one-week interactive water education programs held in June and July for students who are interested in science, engineering or the environment. Water Camp is open to Orange County students entering 7th, 8th and 9th grades in the fall. Space is limited and students must complete an application. Students are selected to attend Water Camp based on an evaluation of a two-paragraph essay describing their interest in the water sciences, and explaining why they should be selected to attend Water Camp. Application procedures are available at www.ocwatercamp.org, or by calling (714) 593-5029. There is no fee to attend and selected students may only attend one session.

OCWD Hotel/Motel Water Efficiency Program
The Hotel/Motel Water Efficiency Program is designed specifically for hotels and motels by offering free laminated towel rack hangers or bed cards that ask hotel and motel guests who spend more than one night to consider using their towels and bed linens more than once. In addition, hotels and motels who sign up for the program also receive a free bilingual instructional video for use in training their housekeeping staff. This program allows the guests and the hotel or motel to be environmentally aware while reducing water use, lowering costs, saving energy and reducing pollution.
